The O2 in Dublin was yesterday named as the fifth best attended music venue in the world for 2011.

The 14,500 capacity Dublin venue topped such flagship arenas as New York’s Madison Square Garden and London’s Albert Hall. The total receipts for the Irish venue was in excess of €36.26m for 2011 with 670,846 fans attending over the twelve months, a two per cent increase on the previous year.

The two most lucrative nights at the O2 were the ones on which George Michael performed (each night grossed €1.08m). Other big box office acts at the venue included the four sold out shows of hit US TV series Glee (€2.8m),

Westlife’s five night run in April (€2.59m) and Roger Waters production of The Wall (€1.8m for two nights). The O2 in Dublin is jointly owned by Dublin businessman, Harry Crosbie and the Los Angeles-based concert promoters, Live Nation Inc.

The most popular music arena in the world last year was the O2 in London where 1.92 million fans attended concerts. The figures were compiled by US-based Pollstar.
