Westlife on being together for 13 years: “We just love what we do."

Westlife, the popular boy band that has dominated the pop charts and global concert arenas for more than twelve years, is currently in Manila for a special concert tonight, September 29, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

This is the fourth time that they will be performing in Manila, and tonight’s performance is in line with the promotion of their latest album, Gravity.

Westlife was formed July 3, 1998, originally having five members: Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Brian McFadden.

In 2004, Brian McFadden left the group to have more time with his family, and to manage his solo singing career.

The Irish group popularized such hit singles as “Say It Again” (1999), “When You’re Looking Like That” (2000), “Bop, Bop Baby” (2001), “Fool Again” (2002), “Mandy” (cover 2003), “You Raise Me Up” (cover 2005), and “Home” (cover 2007).

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other entertainment media were invited to the band’s press conference held earlier this afternoon, September 29, at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.

The presscon, which was originally scheduled at one o’clock, was moved to three o’clock. Shane explained, “We thought we could sleep until four [P.M.].

“Then, someone came knocking on my door saying, ‘The press is waiting for you downstairs!’

“We didn’t know there will be a presscon!”

MATURED BAND

Through the years, Westlife’s band members have gone on with their own lives. Despite this, they are still intact, and still enjoy making music together.

Mark Feehily explains, “When you’re given an opportunity, you just got to realize what the opportunity is and just keep going, and do what you love doing.

“And you know, when we come to the Philippines and we get a response like this after thirteen years, it means we’re doing the right thing.”

Shane then adds, “I think we just love what we do, we have a great career, we love singing, [and] we’ve always wanted to be in a band.

“I think what makes you stop enjoying it is when you stop doing it.”

THE CONCERT

Meanwhile, Nicky mentioned that he was hoping that Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao could make it to their concert.

Unfortunately, Pacquiao couldn’t make it due to prior commitments.

Despite their initial disappointment, Nicky says that it’s okay. Although he still wished that his idol could at least make a surprise appearance during their press conference earlier this afternoon.

Kian, on the other hand, mentioned that he wishes to have a concert performance someday with globally-renowned Filipina singer Charice Pempengco.

Asked what their fans will be looking forward to at their concert tonight, Shane exclaimed, “An amazing show!

“The Philippines is one of our favorite countries in the world. When we arrived at the airport, there were a lot of fans there.
